Change Must Be EMOTIONAL!

Since I began addressed how fat soceity has become, I have received hundreds of supportive emails. We are all getting fed up with the crap restaurants serve (not to mention the mamouth servings!).

Are the restaurants at fault for offering 32 oz. drinks and calling them ’small’? Or are they just giving in to what their customers want?

Do we spend out time trying to educate consumers about how many calories, poor carbs and fat are really in the food we are eating?

Most of the people who emailed me told me we must educate consumers about how much fat is in the food, caloric intake, etc…

I don’t think the answers are just telling people about the nutrient content, portion size, etc. It must be stronger. It has to sink in emotionally.

We all knew movie theatre popcorn wasn’t good for us, but it wasn’t until the Center of Science and Public Interest made this comment that things started to change…

“A medium-sized butter popcorn at a typical neighborhood movie theater contains more artery-clogging fat than a bacon and eggs breakfast, a Big Mac and fries for lunch, and a steak dinner with all the trimmings–combined!”

That’s powerful stuff. A lot more powerful than popcorn has 37 grams of saturated fat.

So if we want to really make a change in this world about health, fitness and nutrition, it has to appeal on an emotional level.

What do you think? How can we make changes?

  • Interesting thought. You're absolutely right... we knew buttery popcorn at the movies were bad for us, but it wasn't until the the Center of Science and Public Interest comment that people began to change.

I agree with you... change must be emotional.

Great post, and great blog. I will be certain to add your blog to my web site's (Bariatric Food Products) resource page.

Eating is often times the only pleasure people have in their lives. That is an enormous emotional barrier. Those that have pain and health issues because of their weight have been educated, fact is, they know better. The knowledge is not enough. What then is the answer for these people?
