Why we do what we do

Here’s a great video reminding us all about the true value of sportsmanship:

  • Duncan - UK
Re. Would boys do the same?
    And to Chris Laing.
Remember Paulo DiCanio? West Ham United striker, playing in a Premiership 'soccer' match (our top professional league). Instead of heading a cross into an open net he caught the ball and stopped play - because the opposition goalie was down injured. Moments like this, and like the video, are priceless.
Are these things common place? Unfortunately not. The World would be a much better place if they were. But we live in hope.

Character still is an overwhelming quality! How many athletes compete to win without thought as to how others are affected on and off the field. In a time where steriods, on the field and off the field issues are headlines, its great to see this action being displayed in the competitive arena. This reminds me of the Jake Porter story in the football game between McDermott and Waverly. See the story here: http://www.fragilex.org/cfxf/family_article.php or the youtube clip of his run here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrjASG1rJ3U
  • Just imagine what the world would be like if the news was always filled with stories like that INSTEAD of the evil crap they constantly show!

Let's keep changing the world for the better!
  • Awesome lesson in character.

I live in the Uk and watch a lot of premiership football (socer). Players here often do what they need to do to win. Players fake injuries, others shout at the injured player who they think is faking their injury. Sportmanship goes out of the window and you wonder if this is still classed as a 'sport' or a business. Watching this gives me hope that there are people out there who are willing to do the right thing regardless of the implications (losing or feeling embarassed). What a great role model.

Thank You, made my night!Reminds me of Sir Winston Churchill's speach to his people during WW II. Never give up! Never give up! Never give up!
  • In an era of drugs and cheating... it's great to see that sportsmanship and respect come first every once in a while. We just don't see that as much as we should.
  • This video depicts what I lecture, and exactly what I tell my students. This was very emotional for me and I felt the feelings of true camaraderie. Wow, very inspirational Ryan. I am glad to see that this type of sportsmanship still exists.
  • Ryan,

The Human brain they say we use only 1/10, but I disagree because this display has proven that the human brain linked to the most powerful emotional unseen force; the heart, can far surpass any fraction that science may say we are restricted to! Wonderful! This is not sportsmanship, this is a display of beautiful souls seeing past the physical world!

Thanks Ryan and all the girls on that field!

    Ryan:

There were 13 other players on the Central Washington team, 7 were seniors that were playing there last game. A game where two of their Central Washington teammates choose to end the Central Washington Season and their college .

Those two sports were on TV etc. the other Central Washington Players lost the game, did not make regional’s went home and will always remember those two good sports as the two who ended their college career.

One thing we need to remember at the college level there is a scoreboard and it has a purpose.
Cental Washington Players and Coaches minus 2 know that better now than any of us.

Being bombarded everyday with negative news makes you kinda forget that there is soo much good in this world- thanks for reminding me!! That was great- and yes I got choked up- D*@#it
  • Tamar
What a wonderful story! Thank you so much. Look what an impact that action had, how many people it touched and continues to touch--just winning the game would not have had any impact on anyone except themselves. Makes a person stop and think.
  • I live in Washington State and haven't even seen or heard of this story! I like hearing the stories about female athletes. I scan the sports section of my local newspapers, if there isn't a word about a female athlete on the first page I don't finish reading it. Thanks, I will definitely share this w/ my clients!
  • Yep, made me teary as well.
I will be forwarding this to my mailing list.
Keep up the awesome work and thanks for the book.

Thanks for sharing Ryan. Sadly, this story is a dipiction of a lost custom that is the origin of true athletics. Watching this reveals that there remains a pulse in the beat of the heart of sports contrary to what is focused on (and rewarded) today.

Yes, I'm not ashamed to say that it did bring tears to my eyes. thank you for sharing it with us. Whether it would have happened in a boys game I do not know but suspect that it would have been less likely because boys are often more aggressive and assertive, and encouraged to be so, but I hope that it would.
  • This is absolutely awesome, my wife and I both teared up on this one. I hope that my children, my grandchildren, and even I myself will do the same thing when confronted with any similar situation. These young people are the future, and with this type of character there is hope for the future.

So many people want to blame the parents when something goes wrong, so I think in this case we should definitely give kudos to the parents of these young women.

Thank you Ryan for sharing this.

Wow-everyone should watch this...great story, gave me chills, thanks for sharing.

This is a great story about the values You're learning while practicing team sport. I'm also involved with different team and sport, but also have experienced something similar (great sportmanship from loosing team oponent), so this video reminded me of that moment and all the great things I've learned and experienced through team spirit.
  • WOW, Very Cool!Thanks Ryan

    Congrat's Sarah :-)
  • Moments like these are priceless, motivating, and help inspire us to remember there's more to strength than just the physical. And it's that very development of character strength that also gives us tremendous physical strength as well in all we do. Thanks for posting this!
  • Hi Ryan,
It always increases my faith in humanity to see examples of people who go beyond the expected and do the right thing. Thanks for sharing this. Every example of this behavior shown empowers others to also do the right thing in challenging moments.

I had read about this and saw it on the news but seeing the video was even more emotional and heartwarming. It restores a faith in our young people.
  • This is a great inspirational story.

Sometimes there is more to life than stats and numbers on a scorecard.

Sometimes we have to put others before ourselves for our common good.

    Have a great weekend. :)

    Ryan,
I live not a hundred miles from Central Washington and when I watched this I really wanted to put it on my site. I read in your last e-mail that you were leaving for a couple of days so I went ahead and put your page in tact on my website and giving everyone credit for the production of the video. If this is not okay please let me know and I will take it down. I thought it would be okay as I get nothing from it other than passing on a truly great story. Thanks for passing it on. The web site that it is on is my own personal site and I receive nothing from it other than to recognize kids accomplishments and pass on things like this and write inspirational and motivational articles. I have done business with you for years and I applaud your success in the field.
    Thanks Ryan

    awesome
  • Hey Ryan....

Tears happened here as well. I also sent this to my list. What a great response I received. SO MANY saying this is what life is all about and how they used the tissues I recommended they have near them.

Winning is 'nice', but not everything. What these two girls did will help them in life more than any win or championship.

Now, although I got so many positive responses about this, there is always that ONE BONE HEAD in the crowd.
Don't get me wrong, we all have our own opinions, as I know I do ;), BUT I got an email from a lady who responded like this: (this is her actual email)
"I SIGNED UP FOR BOOT CAMPS UPDATES NOT THIS CRAP! TAKE ME OFF YOUR LIST"..

    :)

That is the truth everyone. I feel so sad that she goes through life this way.

    In Good health,

    Barry

When I first read about this story and saw this video a few weeks ago I was truly moved. I'm curious to here other peoples thoughts as to whether or not this would have happened at a boys sporting event.

I truly do not think that it would have. I have three children (1 boy and 2 girls) all who play competive sports and there is a different atmosphere and team work at girls events than boys. Girls seem to get the teamwork concept better than the boys, and I think alot of that has to do with the parents.

Parents of boys seem to think there is a pro contract at the end. Wake up call to these kinds of parents -- there probably isn't. Girls are truly out there playing for the love of the game.

I'm interested to see what others think.
  • What a great display of sportsmanship!! These ladies are a perfect example of how we should treat everyone in our daily lives, not just on the playing field. The world would be a much better place...

Thank you for sharing this Ryan!
  • WOW! I am choked up, crying a lot here. My friend and mentor, Ryan Lee...wow.

I remember when I tore my ACL. I remember right before they Put me "under" for surgery, I promised myself that I would make sure what happened to me does not happen to other wrestlers, and I would do all I could to make sure my pain would become a gift.

Because of that injury, and because of that old book that was $ 99 and offering me my money back, I dove in and have now done what I have always wanted to do.

Thanks for sharing this brother, this brought me right back to the exact beginning of why I am doing what I do today :)

    Happy Memorial Day :)
