Create a Whiteboard for Just $13.85 (and why you should never let me install it for you!)

Yesterday I did a video about focus and I also mentioned my two huge 8 ft. whiteboards.

You want the gory details, here ya go:

Let this be a lesson to anyone who hates doing any type of ‘house work’ as much as I do. The journey sucked but the results are good.

Step 1: Go to any hardware store. I chose Home Depot because it’s 1 block from my office (usually I try not to step foot in that insane madhouse, but it made geographic sense at the time)

Step 2: Find something called “Tile Board”. It’s sold in HUGE sheets like drywall and contractors use it in bathrooms (still not sure what you do with it!). Mine cost $13.85 per sheet. Tile board works perfect for dry-erase markers.

Step 3: Either have it cut at the store into a smaller sheet so you can fit the beast into your car. Yes, the board it BIG and since there were no carts left, I had to carry these two board through the store. Of course, it was Home Depot so there was no one there to help and unfortunately I do not have a 30 foot wingspan.

OR

You can stuff it into your car like I did below. (it barely fit in my shiny new Range Rover, I know.. poor me). I did get sneers from the Home Depot crowd as they saw me struggling to get the huge sheet into my car. Not sure if it was the fact I was struggling with the boards or if it was my car that stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the contractor vans and pick up trucks. But like magic, I transformed in McGyver tied that bad boy down with some rope!

Step 4: Get some wood glue and glue it to your wall. Yes, I did try this, and couldn’t get that damn glue gun to work. It all started when I, for the life of me, couldn’t punch a hole at the end of the glue (tip: ball point pens do NOT work well for this!). Then I tried to glue it to the wall using the extra glue that was on my fingers (seriously!). It was a friggen nightmare so I just leaned the boards against the wall. Works fine for me and now I can transport them to my conference room when I need to.

Here’s the culprit:

Step 5: Write down all your plans to take over the world on your new Whiteboard empire! Check out the sweetness below:

white boards

Bottom line:

2 big whiteboards: $13.85
Glue gun I screwed up: about $9
Extra glue on my fingers: free
Paper towel to wipe the glue off the wall: $.05
Large workspace to take over the planet: priceless

Where were you 6 months ago when I spent $150 on a huge 6 foot whiteboard!

    Great tip for future use...
  • Just a couple tips for shoppers. I believe Ryan is referring to a "caulk gun" not a glue gun and the product you want if you are going to glue that to your wall is a tube of Liquid Nails. I like keeping ours mobile so we punched two holes in the top, tied a string between them and we can hang it anywhere.

I got my giant whiteboard from Home Depot for under $12.00. I had to find it myself since all the workers I asked for help assured me they had no such thing. In my Home Depot, they had the tile board over in the lumber section.

I ended up cutting mine into different sized pieces and putting the pieces into empty picture frames. I found a HUGE frame at Goodwill for $2.00. Then you just hang the frames on the wall and don't have to deal with glue or screws. Yardsales and thrift stores are great places to find big, cheap frames.

If your whiteboard idea doesn't last try something that will!

The last and only whiteboard that you will ever need.
  • Ryan,
Glad you posted this. I would have gone to Staples and purchased whiteboards for $79.00 each. This is a whole lot more economical. I like it.
  • Funny and Awesome, simple EFFECTIVE reality!! Thanks Ryan!

Hey. What a great tip Ryan. We don't have home depot here in Australia but I will be out there trying to find an equivalent. I hope none of your clients are trying to make a living out of the whiteboard niche :-)

This is funny...I needed a backdrop for filming videos in my office, so I built (I can barely hammer a nail straight) this big square frame from wood and brackets, then stapled a huge piece of black fabric to it. It worked well enough, but was flimsy as hell, and had to be propped up from front and back with boxes and whatever else I could find. I finally caved and had a relative build me 3 modular walls that snap together. I've designed all kinds of crazy contraptions and he's built them all...I don't know why I feel the need to do it myself the first time!! White board will be next..

Maybe you can use velcro ;)

You'd make Pinky and the Brain jealous...

    Ryan,

Great story! I'm sure HGTV will be calling you up soon!

Just to share, I got a great tip from Chris Guerriero -- buy the thickest, white latex paint you can find and paint a WHOLE wall to use as your "whiteboard". I thought that was a great tip, and will be painting a wall in my office for brainstorming.

The bigger the wall = the bigger the ideas.

    Peace,

  • Going to Home Depot tomorrow!!! Try not to let the wife know...she will think I am inspired to do some home improvement projects (which I really hate to do).....Thanks for the great tip Ryan!!
  • Hey Ryan...

    Ryan:

I love it...I'll try it in my office...You re-enacting on video would've even been funnier...Nick
  • We use that for our Dry Erase at my gym. It's great.

  • JeremyNelms
Oh, no! I had a step-by-step guide written for you to install this properly, complete with a NICE looking frame! Did the internet or Word Press eat my post? :)

    Hi Ryan,
Your humorous story reminded me about a very basic truth: do what you love and do best and outsource (hire someone) the rest. And I am giving this advise to a passive income and continuity income person who shows and tells others how to make all kinds of money. I know, it's great for Tweeter. Besides, Valerie Young loves these kind of stories also.

  • I love dry erase boards! I have several smaller ones on my office walls. But they are very expensive. Thanks for the tip Ryan! I didn't know you could get something to work like a white board for so cheap!
Going to Lowe's this weekend. I think I'll skip the glue though since I currently rent. : )

  • Ryan, this has got to be the tip of the year -

Have you ever seen my videos? In my office (aka bedroom) I have notes on push bards that I keep on easles all around me, kind of like a command center - I then have to hide all of this stuff any time I have a young lady over -

But your tile boards are the solution - now I can just write on the walls - great work McGyver!

Hilarious, Ryan. Seriously. Internet marketing extraordinaire, home improvement . . . well, at least you're creative at it.

Great tip about the tile boards though - much better than the dry erase boards.

    Enjoy your date.
